Choosing a pilates studio is not an endeavor you should take lightly. There are many factors to consider when choosing which facility you will work out in. The first thing you want to look at are the credentials of the pilates teachers. You want to have a teacher that is well-versed in anatomy, biomechanics and how to prevent injury. It is very easy to get injured when starting or doing a fitness routine and you don\’t want to be cavalier about which place you will start to practice pilates. You want to make sure you are practicing wtih a seasoned teacher that has been teaching pilates for at least 7 years. Make sure you don\’t start with a teacher that is new, which often happens at the cheaper classes since they are trying to build up their clientele and are more likely to offer steep discounts in order to entice new students to start with them.
You also want to make sure you are not in a class that is filled with a huge amount of students. Even if the teacher is experienced if there are 30 people in the pilates class you are not going to get the attention that you need, which is even more important if you are new and starting out. Ideally you should be in a small group class of no more than 10 students. The gyms tend to have large classes so even they might be cheaper you will not be getting the same level of teaching than a small class.
You also want to have a variety of styles such as mat pilates, reformer pilates, postpartum pilates and other modalities such as gyrotonic and gyrokenesis. These other modalities tend to use the equipment which is better for beginners since it controls your movement and you will get a more efficient and safer workout. Gyrokinesis will help you to shape, tone and strengthen your body in using specific, controlled workouts and usually with prescriptive exercise from the pilates teacher.
You also want a pilates teacher that is not only experienced and well-trained but patient and encouraging. They should have these interpersonal skills so that you feel encouraged and motivated and not scared and intimidated by others in the class. Some of the most experienced and most qualified teachers can make their students feel bad about the way they workout so make sure your teacher is caring and kind as well as credentialed and qualified.
